Quilters comes home to Denver

(left to right) Linda Mugleston, Victoria Adams-Zischke, Susannah Flood, Christine Rowan and Kara Lindsay.

Twenty-six years ago, Quilters debuted in Denver. After making a scene among regional theaters, then landing on Broadway and earning six Tony Award nominations–it’s back at the DCPA with a new production and a talented cast to sing home about. Written by Molly Newman and Barbara Damashek with music and lyrics by Damashek, the musical tells the story of life as a female in the American West, with scenes of joy to hardship and back again. Six women and one gent take the stage–each acting out more than one character–with plenty of feeling and voices that sing out in beautiful, looping harmonies that are just wonderful to listen to. Kathleen M. Brady, original Quilters touring company member, leads the show as soulful matriarch Sarah, and you’ll love the character Lizzy (performed by Susannah Flood) who brings comedic relief as the girl who’s not quite cut out for quilting.

And in the lobby of the Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex, don’t miss a special exhibit of quilts–a roundup of "quilts with a story" from The Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum. (Among them, you’ll find the original quilt from the premiere of Quilters and panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt, the largest ongoing community arts project around the globe).

You won’t want to miss this homecoming, which runs through July 12 at The Stage Theatre in the Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex. To purchase tickets, stop by the box office from 10 am to 6 pm, Monday through Saturday, or call (303) 893-4100 or visit denvercenter.org.
