I just got back from a visit with the fine folks at Design Workshop in Aspen. They’re the landscape-design gurus behind many of the beautiful gardens and outdoorscapes in Aspen (and beyond) and if you ask me, everything they touch turns to gold. I thought you’d like to see a few snapshots from the tour of their gardens–wouldn’t you just love to pass a summer afternoon in the midst of any one of these scenes, cool drink and good read in hand? Don’t miss more of their work: designworkshop.com.

All things Madeline Weinrib: Our friends at Tweed Interiors in Telluride recently let us in on the treasure trove of home design products that is Madeline Weinrib. From fabrics to furniture, beach towels to bedding (Blue Collins Ikat Bedspread pictured here)—all in vibrant ikats and bold prints—Madeline’s pieces add the perfect amount of punch.

Glass bottles by Michael Schunke: These hand-blown glass bottles are where function meets beauty. Top your table, mantle or shelf with one of these sculptures, and be happy. Better yet, Michael Schunke will be exhibiting at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival, so you can pick up some of these beauties for yourself (and when you go, stop by and visit us at the CH&L booth).

We were a lucky bunch to get to attend the 2010 Crystal Awards, the annual awards gala of ASID Colorado. The evening’s highlights include: a gorgeous setting (the ballroom of the historic Sherman St. Events Center in downtown Denver); a room full of brilliantly talented designers; a look at the best projects in the state; and a keynote address on the concept of “Rough Luxe.” (“Rough Luxe” is a design idea that marries the stark surfaces of modern design with the “perfectly imperfect” elements of the past for an eclectic aesthetic that finds itself at home in today’s living spaces.) Catch a sneak peek of some of the winning projects (plus a few party photos) here, and see all of the winners in our June/July issue.

These fresh products have got us clamoring for warm weather and a taste of good Colorado outdoor living. And we hope they get you excited for our upcoming June/July Outdoor Living Issue, one of our favorites. (We’re working on it right now.)

Not long ago I moved out of a quirky old Victorian in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood into a happy little duplex in the Highlands. What do I love about my new neighborhood? Here’s what makes the short list: On my daily commute I get to relish one of the best views of downtown in all of Denver (heading southeast on Speer Blvd. coming down the hill from the Highlands); I share a zip code with such delectable restaurants as Root Down and Duo; and, perhaps best of all, I’m within walking distance of The Perfect Petal boutique, which purveys the most fabulously edited collection of home accessories, stationery, flowers and gifts. You can’t walk in without uttering exclamations of delight, I assure you.

Which is why I was thrilled to hear that the botanical boutique is branching out and opening up a new shop–called Posh–at Larimer Square. Doors open the end of April. If I thought The Perfect Petal had it all, I thought I’d better find out what kinds of goods and wares I could look forward to from its sister shop.

So I caught owner Cindy Ollig on the phone this Friday afternoon and she filled me in:

"We’re calling it "antiquarian chic," but we’ll be selling a lot of contemporary items–not contemporary as in "modern," but more what’s happening now. We’ll have a lot of paper products, tabletop accessories and linens, and really fun furniture… also, really good lighting. We’re probably bringing in 16 jewelry lines and a couple of really fun bag lines. Whereas The Perfect Petal is definitely more botanical, Posh is a little bit more urban with some unexpected, intriguing objects for the home."

Just what I wanted to know.

And stay tuned for word on the product lines Posh will be carrying. To follow The Perfect Petal’s blog, click here.

One of the joys of this job is the research. Really and truly, I am fortunate to be able to check out all of the newest, hottest and most wonderful products without having to think of them in terms of a client or a particular bit of editorial coverage. I simply look for lovely items and file them away for the future. This week, I was at the Denver Design District, and a few amazing new objects caught my eye…

Macro Fine Art Safari Table is beautiful–unlike anything you’ve ever seen. The rich golds, blacks, creams, and browns can work with almost any palette, but the unique and durable design is sure to stand out in any room. The design studio is local and can integrate any number of textural, photographic art images on the surface as well (or go for wall art in the same genre). Find this line at C.A.I. Designs.

Two colorways of the fun new Pompano fabric with fluffy chenille accents at Wesco Fabrics.

Dimensional textiles seem to be “in”… I saw this show-stopping, architectural Lizzo fabric at Kravet. You really need to touch it. Amazing.

Hickory Chair Duchamp Sideboard is elegant with clean, smooth lines and simple, tapered legs. A pewter grill in oval-shaped overlays make this piece a standout. Two interior drawers, one with a silver liner, provide storage. Don’t miss this piece on the floor at Hoff Miller

Scalamandre is at Phoebe Marsh and this stunning group of textiles in soft grey and yellow really caught my eye. Very new, very fresh and totally sophisticated. I want the floral for my bedroom.

This gorgeous new curvilinear Parkway outdoor furniture from Brown Jordan is at Columbine Showroom. You’ll want to build a patio just to get this stunning piece and enjoy your lovely Colorado spring/summer/fall.

Two showrooms are bringing in exciting new furniture lines in the next few months, and both are available to order now:

Objets, Ltd. is bringing in Christopher Guy: the attention to detail and innate simplicity of these pieces redefine the aesthetics of design. The distinctive proportion and scale of these home furnishings make them a centerpiece in any room. You can order them now, and Objets will have product in the showroom by April.

Whitney Evans Ltd. is bringing in the Dorothy Draper line from Kindel, bursting with clean elegance and touches of those ornate forms Draper is known for. These pieces are reproductions, adaptations and inspirations from Draper’s corporate design work. Many pieces can be ordered with custom dimensions and finishes.

Overall, a nice group of glamorous items, and I’m looking forward to my next foray into more shops and showrooms soon!

We arrived to photograph this home, designed by Barrett Studio architects of Boulder, for our May Eco-Living Issue at 8:30 am to lovely, soft sunshine. Photographer Emily Minton Redfield (left) and her assistant Kimberly Gavin unloaded all of the photo gear and started setting up. After we looked at the many possible angles of this stylish, eco-friendly home, we decided to start in this living room area. We shot a couple versions (one just might be the cover) and were pleased as we moved through the house capturing very nice images of several rooms. But just after we broke for a quick lunch, the snow started falling–which would never do for a spring issue! We were so relieved that we had finished shooting all of the rooms that required natural sunlight and had moved on to other interior shots and the basement. Phew.

Don’t miss the full story in the pages of our May issue, due to hit newsstands mid-April. –Elaine St. Louis, CH&L art director

Many of us are familiar with the angled spaces, off-kilter planes and intriguing nooks and crannies of the Denver Art Museum’s Frederic C. Hamilton Building. Now, these distinctive spaces have become canvases for large-scale, site-specific works by 17 artists in a brand-new exhibit called Embrace! (which opened November 14, 2009 and runs through April 4, 2010). Trust us, this one is not-to-be-missed. Spectacular. Here’s a taste; find out more at denverartmuseum.org (or just go see for yourself).

Interior designer Nadia Hartman of Nadia Hartman Interiors holds a reflector card for photographer Martin Crabb as they put the finishing touches on lighting for the tabletop story that appears on pages 33 and 34 of our November/December Bed & Bath Issue.

For a festive and inviting holiday spread, Nadia dressed up a client’s dining table with a glowing, sparkling mix of white and silver, plus just the right amount of mirror and crystal, from The Lark in Denver’s Country Club neighborhood. Click here to see the photos and for tips on how to take home the look.
