I’ll admit it, I really liked school. I loved the start of a new year, I loved buying fresh notebooks, and mostly I loved learning. And every time the leaves start to change, the air gets cool and a new school year starts…I feel like something is missing. I want to go to class and learn new things. This desire has driven me to seek out ways to learn a new skill and become a better part of the Denver community. Last fall it was knitting, this year it’s writing. Once I started poking around, I found (not surprisingly) that Denver has a wealth of learning opportunities.

If you’re like me—thirsty for knowledge—consider looking into classes at any one of these places…you never know what talents you’re harboring:

Morey Neighborhood Center – I recommend “Knitting in the Neighborhood.”

Lighthouse Writers Workshop – In addition to classes, they host a number of fascinating author events.

CorePower Yoga – Boot Camp is a distant dream of mine.

Cook Street School of Fine Cooking – With classes titled “Pasta! Pasta! Pasta!” and “Steak & Scotch,” who can resist?

Kitchen Table Cooking School

Emily Griffith Opportunity School

Denver Public Library

Denver Art Museum – Starting soon: “How to Look at Art,” a basic seminar on viewing and interpreting art. This sounds like it would be helpful for your next art purchase!

BridgeDenver Language Center – I think I’m setting my sights on Italian classes next.

Last Thursday, July 15, the Governor’s Residence Preservation Fund threw a fabulous garden party. The party, sponsored by CH&L, is a non-partisan fund-raising event that brings many wonderful things together in one place: butlered champagne, catered treats and rubbing elbows with Colorado’s finest, all in the beautiful gardens surrounding the Boettcher Mansion.

People mingled through the South Terrace gardens, and passed the evening sipping on champagne and munching on some of the most delightful treats (including a phenomenal lobster taco from Marlowe’s). Some very notorious Colorado residents came out to enjoy the party, including former first lady Frances Owens and Arlene Hirschfeld.

The Garden Party raises funds that will be used to maintain one of Colorado’s most beautiful and important homes. The GRPF holds events year round, welcoming the public inside Colorado’s Home to get a taste of our state’s history through the beautiful residence.

If you’re interested in attending one of the GRPF’s events or attending next year’s Garden Party, visit www.coloradoshome.org.

If you’re anything like me, nice spring days not only get you dreaming of long lazy days in the sun, but your heart starts to twitter at the thought of the delicious produce that summer brings. For me, it all starts with spring rhubarb. Then stretches into the fall with acorn squash and hatch green chiles. And where do I find the best gems the Colorado earth has to offer? Local farmers markets, of course.

My romance generally begins with the anticipation of counting down the days until May, when the market just down the way from my home opens. Which is disheartening considering I’m in the throes of desire once March hits. This year, in my anticipation, I’ve become more clever and done a bit of research. And it was worth it: I’ve found that the Boulder Farmers’ Market opens in just over a week–the joy!

Come rejoice in the produce season with me at your local farmers’ market:

Boulder Farmers’ Market: Opens April 4

Cherry Creek Fresh Market: Opens May 1

Crested Butte Farmers Market: Opens June 21

Durango Farmers Market: Opens May 9

Fort Collins Winter Farmers Markets: Closes March 27

And click here for many more!
